Acceptable Use Policy

Videotron Telecom Ltd’s (VTL) Acceptable Use Policy aims at protecting VTL, it’s customers and the Internet community in general against activities that are contrary to netiquette and, in some cases, illegal.

Uses permitted / prohibited
Any activity that prohibits someone else to enjoy fully it’s Internet access or that infringes on it’s rights is prohibited.

Content
The following are prohibited on or from VTL’s network :

  • transmitting, storing or distributing
    • material that is legally protected (by copyright, trademark, trade secret, etc.), without proper autorisation
    • viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, or any material used to make them
  • obscene, defamatory content
  • sending unsollicited e-mail (« junk mail », « spam »)
  • « excessive crossposting » on Usenet
  • using or setting an « open » server, such as a mail relay or a proxy (these servers are allowed provided that they are configured in such a way as to limit their access only to the users of the owner)
Network Security
The following or similar activities are forbidden :
  • probing, scaning, vulnerability testing, illegal access or attempt thereof
  • interfering with the service to a user, a system, a host or a network; denial of service (DoS) attacks : mailbomb, flood, system overload, vulnerability exploit
  • altering or forging of TCP, mail or Usenet header (« spoofing ») (This provision is not intended to disallow the use of aliases when and where it is a common practice)


Coverage of the Policy
This Policy applies to all and any user of VTL’s network, whether or not they have a direct contract with VTL. Each customer has the responsibility to see to it that its end-users / customers respects this AUP.
The spirit of the Policy is to be considered. Any technical detail herein is an example. The list is neither complete nor restrictive.
 

Consequences
All events reported or detected are investigated.
VTL may involve, and will cooperate with, law enforcement authorities, if need be.
Violation of this AUP may result in partial or total suspension of service, temporarily or permanently. In accordance with the sections on use of the services as well as interruption of services by VTL, included in the Terms of Services attached to VTL’s standard contracts, the following actions may be taken to enforce this Policy :

  • removal of illegal documents
  • access filtering
  • temporary service suspension
  • termination of contract according to the procedure set forth int said contract
The technical representative of the customer will be informed of any derogatory activity and will be given a reasonnable period to remedy. However, in all cases, VTL reserves the right to take any action, without prior notice, to protect itself, its network, customers, installations and equipments, againts harm and litigation.

If an illegal activity does not originate for VTL’s network, please contact the originating ISP.
To report an incident, please send an e-mail to abuse@videotron.net
Be sure to include all relevant information that will enable us to track the incident :

  • date, time and time-zone of the incident
  • originating IP address
  • details of the infraction (firewall log; copy of message, including all headers, etc.)
